SPOTLIGHT: Organotin Testing & Tin Speciation

Specialized organotin testing, including low-level GC/MS/MS analysis for sediment, soil, and solids. Supporting marine, dredging, industrial, and environmental investigations.

Organotin Testing Laboratory

McCampbell Analytical, Inc. provides organotin testing and tin speciation analysis for environmental consultants, industrial facilities, marine projects, remediation programs, and specialty investigations requiring targeted organometallic analysis.

Organotin testing is commonly requested for projects involving sediment assessment, marine or harbor investigations, dredging support, industrial source evaluations, and environmental monitoring. Because organotin compounds are much more toxic than inorganic tin, speciated organotin testing is often required for aquatic projects.

Organotin compounds were most commonly used as an anti-fouling biocide in marine and aquatic coatings. MAI supports projects requiring reliable and very low sensitivity organotin data, including mono- through tetrabutyl tin speciation in a variety of regulated matrices.

MAI provides targeted organotin analysis to help clients evaluate project-specific compounds, matrices, reporting needs, and regulatory or disposal requirements.

Organotin Methods & Reporting Limits

We are currently offering a low-level GC/MS/MS method for sediment, soil, and other solid matrices. We also offer standard GC/MS methods for both water and solid samples. The Reporting Limits (RL) are listed in the table below. We are currently set up for select tissue matrices. Please contact us to discuss specific tissue types and project requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Organotin testing is used to identify and quantify tin-containing organic compounds, such as monobutyltin, dibutyltin, tributyltin and tetrabutyltin in environmental and industrial samples.
Organotin compounds are organometallic chemicals containing tin bonded to carbon-based groups. They have been used in marine coatings, industrial applications, catalysts, PVC stabilizers, and other specialty products.
Total tin results do not identify which tin compounds are present. Organotin analysis identifies and quantifies the individual butyltin compounds, comprising tetrabutyltin (TeBT), tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT), providing useful information on these the most common & most toxic organictin compounds present in aquatic settings.
MAI's specialty capabilities include mono- through tetrabutyl tin speciation. Contact the laboratory to discuss project-specific analytes, matrices, reporting limits, and data requirements.
Yes. Organotin analyses can have specific container, preservation, hold time, reporting limit, and matrix requirements. Contact MAI before sampling to ensure your project is set up correctly.
Tributyltin (TBT) is an organotin compound historically used in marine antifouling coatings and other industrial applications. Environmental investigations may include TBT along with dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) to better understand contamination sources and degradation patterns.

Organotin Project Planning Support

Organotin analyses often require careful consideration of target compounds, sample matrices, reporting limits, and project objectives. Whether your project involves sediment investigations, marine assessments, industrial facilities, wastewater studies, or specialty environmental monitoring, MAI can help ensure the appropriate analytical approach is selected before sampling.

Related Environmental Testing Services

Organotin projects often overlap with other environmental testing needs. MAI also provides Dredge & Sediment Testing, Metals Testing, Methyl Mercury Testing, Hazardous Waste Testing, and PFAS Testing for environmental, industrial, and marine investigations.
